A Brief History of Veterans Day

A Brief History of Veterans Day

Do you know why we honor our veterans for Veterans Day on November 11th? On the 11th hour, on the 11th day, in the 11th month in 1918 an armistice, a truce, was entered between the Allied Nation and Germany agreeing that they would end World War I.

Veterans Day is so much more than a day off of school or work. It’s a day that we are able to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. Many of us who may not have a veteran in our family, or come from a military background, might not know as much about Veterans Day.

Here is a brief history to provide a better understanding of this day for honoring and commemorating these heroes.

November 11th, 1918 -The Allied Nations and Germany agreed to put World War I (WWI) to an end with an armistice.

June 28th, 1919 -WWI officially ends with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France.

November 1919 - Woodrow Wilson proclaims November 11th as Armistice Day. This day was meant to commemorate the armistice and the end of WWI.

May 13th, 1938 - Armistice Day became a legal holiday. Originally, this holiday was intended to honor WWI veterans.

June 1st, 1954 -After WWII and the Korean War, Congress amends the initial Act for Armistice Day to change "Armistice" to "Veterans." This changed November 11th from honoring WWI veterans to honoring all veterans.

October 8th, 1954 - Eisenhower issues the first Veterans Day Proclamation.

June 28th, 1968 -The Uniform Holiday Act assigned Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October to add a longer weekend

October 25th, 1971 - The first Veterans Day on the new day is observed, but many people were confused and had much resistance to the change.

September 20th, 1975 - Gerald Ford signs a law to return Veterans Day to November 11th starting again in 1978.

Veterans Day is such an important day that holds historic, as well as patriotic value. It is important that we honor and commemorate our veterans and honor the significant events that make our history what it is.
