8 Practical Tips for Reducing Swelling in Hot Weather

woman using a black and green foot roller on the beach.

Hey there,

Got a great question from Cara in our Ask Me Anything segment!

I have neuropathy. Do you have any tips for reducing swelling in the legs and feet during hot weather? It seems to get worse in the summer.

Swelling can be more common in the summer due to the heat causing blood vessels to expand, which can make it harder for fluids to circulate properly.

For those of us with neuropathy, this can be particularly troublesome because our nerves aren’t as effective at signaling the body to keep things moving.

Here are some practical tips that can really help, along with ways to make the most of our Outback products:

1. Foot Elevation 🛋️

Try elevating your legs! Place your legs up on a wedge pillow or use a couple of pillows stacked at a 45-degree angle. This helps encourage fluid to drain away from your feet and legs more effectively.

2. Chill Out with Our Outback Pain Cream ❄️

Our Outback Pain Cream is fantastic for more than just pain relief. It has a cooling effect that can soothe swollen areas. Apply it to your legs and feet, and then prop them up. The combined cooling sensation and elevation can make a significant difference!

3. Comfortable, Breathable Footwear 👟

Invest in shoes that offer good support and breathability. Shoes with mesh uppers or cooling technology can help keep your feet comfortable and reduce the risk of swelling. Look for styles that fit well and provide ample cushioning.

4. Cooling Foot Baths with a Touch of Salt 🛁

Soak your feet in a bath with cool water and a bit of Epsom salt or sea salt. This helps draw out excess fluid and provides a refreshing feeling. For an extra treat, add a few drops of essential oil if you enjoy that!

5. Daily Foot Exercises 🚶

Simple foot exercises can help improve circulation and reduce swelling. Try flexing and pointing your toes, or gently rotating your ankles. These can be done while seated or lying down and only take a few minutes.

6. Use a Foot Roller or Massage Ball 🎳

Rolling your feet over a foot roller or a massage ball can help stimulate blood flow and ease swelling. It’s an easy, effective way to manage discomfort while watching TV or relaxing.

7. Cooling Gel Packs for Relief 🧊

Keep some cooling gel packs in the freezer and apply them to your feet when you need relief. They’re perfect for a quick cooldown and can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

8. Enjoy Relaxing Moments 🛌

Make time for relaxation and rest. Stress can contribute to swelling, so finding time to unwind and elevate your feet can help manage your symptoms.

I hope these tips bring some relief and comfort during the hot weather. Give them a try and see what works best for you. And if you have your own questions, feel free to email me at mark@outbackoil.com
